In 2018, Fairmont Pacific Rim and GreenStep Solutions Inc. began the journey to the elimination of single-use plastics within the hotels operations.
In our guestrooms, we have removed the single-use amenity bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion, and have opted for large format, reusable versions. This change alone has resulted in the removal of more than 1.6 tonnes of plastic from our operation in just one calendar year– the equivalent weight of 2,670 pairs of shoes! We have also replaced the plastic water bottles in our rooms with reusable glass bottles, which has taken out more than 650 kg of plastic from our of our operation annually.
Other innovations have included changing 36,000 plastic key cards and replacing them with sustainable bamboo versions, removing plastic laundry bags in favour of reusable linen versions, and swapping out plastic razors, toothbrushes, cotton buds and shower caps, along with their packaging for environmentally friendly versions.
All food and beverage take-away containers and cutlery has been replaced with fiber-based solutions, and spa body wrap treatments have replaced traditional plastic wrapping with innovative material that absorbs into the skin. We are proud to seek out and serve the freshest and most sustainably-sourced ingredients for all of our dining outlets.
Fairmont Pacific Rim is home to a fleet of BMW cruise and electric bicycles that are readily available for guests to explore Vancouver while reducing their carbon footprint. We also have charging stations available for electric vehicles to encourage eco-friendly transportation.
