Vancouver, BC (June 9, 2023) – The Pacific Gallery at Fairmont Pacific Rim has announced their latest exhibition, ‘A Woman Passing By’ – a solo exhibition of new paintings by Vancouver artist, Angela Grossmann in partnership with Equinox Gallery.
The new exhibition, displayed until September 2023 on the hotel’s second floor, features Angela’s latest body of work; expressive, fluid and frequently elusive, often perceived as traditional portraiture, but in fact taking the genre in new directions. While Grossmann’s depictions have a remarkable likeness, more significantly she brings psychological insights into the representation of the female as visualized in western society. Grossmann depicts the body because she is empowered by it and familiar with it – through observations, memories, and lived experience – and has now been addressing it in her studio practice for over four decades. As a woman, she is able to externalize the complexities of the desiring gaze, bringing to the fore representations of people that not only celebrate beauty, joy, and the maternal, but also embody melancholy, introspection, as well as a subject’s own desires – in other words, unveiling the many dimensions of femininity.
The exhibition is presented in the Pacific Gallery, which spans throughout the first and mezzanine floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim lobby, and sits adjacent to award-winning Botanist. The limited time exhibit is the latest in the Pacific Gallery’s exhibition series and joins the hotel’s celebrated art collection, underscoring the hotel’s continued commitment to bringing art and artistry into all aspects of the property; admission is complimentary to hotel & non-hotel guests.
